A Heritage of Fine Cotton Shirting

Founded in Lancashire in 1796 at the height of the Industrial Revolution, Thomas Mason was among the pioneer mills to weave fine cotton shirt fabrics. The mill quickly became the cloth of choice for London’s premier West End tailors dressing the British aristocracy, with its reputation spreading rapidly across the globe. By the Victorian era, the house was firmly established as an international benchmark for masculine elegance, permanently intertwined with Jermyn Street the historic shirtmaking capital of London.

A Legacy Preserved

During the First World War, the mill contributed to cutting-edge textile research, engineering waterproof and mimetic cottons for pilots, and in 1936 it became the exclusive cloth supplier to Turnbull & Asser, shirtmakers to the British Royal Family.

In 1992, the Bergamo-based Albini family incorporated the historic English mill into the Albini Group, preserving an invaluable archive of 700 volumes of textile designs spanning more than 150 years. This rich heritage continues through the Icons capsule launched in 2017, which reinterprets an archival classic each season. Today, backed by Albini Group’s world-leading shirting expertise, Thomas Mason balances traditional English design identity with refined Italian textile development. Known for vibrant British colour palettes, bold patterns, and exceptional yarn counts, the cloth retains its quintessential English heritage while meeting modern tailoring standards. For bespoke shirtmakers, Thomas Mason represents timeless, archive-driven shirting distinguished by character, sophistication, and enduring quality.
