Anchored on the banks of the River Cervo in Biella, Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti represents one of the most distinguished names in Italian luxury weaving. While the family’s artisan textile roots trace to the mid-eighteenth century, the modern mill was established in 1881 by Antonio Cerruti alongside his brothers and cousin.
From Artisan Roots to Industrial Innovation
A pioneer in early industrialization, adopting electric lighting and high-capacity weaving, the mill expanded significantly over the decades, becoming a vital producer of fine fabrics and employing hundreds of local craftsmen across 140 looms by the mid-twentieth century.
From Biellese Weaving to High Fashion
The house achieved international renown under the visionary leadership of Nino Cerruti, who assumed stewardship in 1951. Innovating the menswear landscape, he established Hitman, launched the tailored prêt-à-porter line Flying Cross, and founded the Paris couture maison Cerruti 1881 at Place de la Madeleine, permanently linking the historic Biellese mill to high fashion.
A New Chapter in Italian Textile Design
After refocusing entirely on textile development, Cerruti unveiled a striking new headquarters designed by architect Vico Magistretti, and in late 2022 the historic mill joined the prestigious Piacenza Group 1733.
